Day 4:
Find the fairy domain in Mandalay
Vehicles to the ancient capital of Mandalay are about 4 p.m. You negotiate a taxi to visit places
like Mahamuni Pagoda, U Bein Bridge, Sagaing Hill and the ancient capital Inwa
before turning back the hotel to check-in.
Mahamuni Pagoda was built in 1784 with the bronze Buddha
statue which is 4 meters high, weighs 6.5 tons,
and is inlaid gold leaf layer in the body 15 cm
thick. According to the legend, the Buddha visited the Dhanyawadi city of
Arakan in 554 BC. King SandaThuriya requested that an image was
casted of him. After casting the Great Image, the
Buddha breathed upon it, and thereafter the image became the exact likeness of
the Mahamuni. Going to the temple soon, you will
witness the Buddhist cleansing ceremony. Only the monk who is virtuous and has
high position in Mandalay can be allowed to wash the Buddha face. First, this monk covered a yellow cloth around the body of
the subject. Next, he took the pitcher and started the spray ceremony to make
the face of the Buddha statue get wet. Then, the monk used the sponge to mop
the Buddha face from forehead to eyes, nose and then to two sides of nose. Coming to his lips, he used soft brush and brushed
gently. Finally, the monk used the fan and fluttered it to make the water on
the Buddha face dry.
Before 6 am, you should be on the U Bein Bridge in order to
admire the dawn. U Bein Bridge was built by the people of Amarapura ancient
village in 1800 by thousands of teak planks with 1,068 pillars, across the lake
Taungthaman. In the dry season, it is high in a surreal
way and mostly crosses seasonal vegetable gardens. But after the summer
rains, the whole area becomes a big lake and water laps just below the floor
planks. This is not only the longest teak bridge in the world with the length of 1.2 km, but also a great place to
enjoy the sunrise and sunset. The light is often best around an hour before
sunset, but by then there will be a large number of tourists and trinket
sellers. A popular visiting tactic is to walk across the bridge then return by
paddle-boat (K5000) as the sun sets.
Leaving U Bein, you come to Sagaing hill, from the center of
Mandalay about 20 km to the southwest. The total length of the stairs leading
to the top of the hill is 1 km. From the top of Sagaing, you can see panoramic
view of the longest river in Myanmar which winds around the foot of hill and around countless high temples nestled
inside the green forest.
Evening is the ideal time for you to go for a walk by the
waterfront and watch the Royal Palace Myanmar (the former). The palace is
designed in a square with red-brown brick wall which ran long and surrounded by
a small river. Walking on the streets, you also admire the lifestyle of people
in Mandalay.
